So for #TeachMeTuesday I'm actually doing kind of a #TechTuesday post. 🤠I just found this new Chrome extension and I've been trying it out this week. It's super fun!
It's called "Earth View from Google Earth" and it's pretty simple but amazing. Basically it shows you a different stunning landscape from the Google Earth satellite images every time you open a new tab in Chrome! It's kind of fun, and much more interesting that the plain old Google search page.
It's a great way to take a few seconds each day to appreciate the beautiful world we live in.

Unsend Feature Now in Gmail App!
As a longtime user of the "Inbox by Gmail" app, I've been saved many times by the UNSEND feature! 😌
This feature has (surprisingly) been missing from the Gmail Android app... until now!
With the new "cancel send" feature, if you change your mind or see a typo as your email is queued to be sent, you can click "cancel" and it will stop sending! (Not that any of us ever does such a thing... Cough, cough) 🙄😆
If you don't see this on your Gmail app, go into your Play Store to check if your app is up-to-date.
Have a great #TechTuesday everyone!

Modern Technology - A Blessing or a Curse? IDP005
On today's podcast, I talked about feeling grateful for the technology in our lives and how it's helped shape the world around us. I really want to reach out to those of you who maybe have grown up with technology around you, or have seen it come into play as you were already an adult, and you've seen the rise of technology. Maybe some of you are pretty excited by technology, and just love the things that it can do in your life. Maybe some of you are a little bit intimidated about technology or it confuses you, or even a little bit scared by it.
Surrounded by Technology
All of us are surrounded by new technology in today's world. Even if you live in an underdeveloped country in Africa, you've probably got a cell phone, and you probably can get on the internet. In my household, we are not wealthy by any means, we're very average Americans. But even so, we have technology surrounding us. We counted up one time and there were something like 11, 12, 13 computers in our house. I can't remember if we were just counting laptops and desktops, we may have been also counting cell phones and tablets, also. But it was still just crazy. How can we have that many? I remember when you would save up just to get your one computer for the whole family. But we aren't alone.

A Two-Edged Sword
Sometimes today it feels like people tend to just talk about the addiction to technology and the problems with technology. Everybody's like, "I hate social media," while at the same time, almost everybody's still using it. We're kind of having this negative vibe in the world about technology right now, but at the same time, we've all been so blessed by it. In reality, it's a two-edged sword.
On one hand, technology enhances and simplifies our lives. On the other hand, it can make it so complicated. I think of something as simple as the fact that in my husband's job, since he works with teams that are in nine different countries, all around the world, he can be on Skype, talking to people in Ecuador, at 9:00 in the morning. Then, at noon, he's emailing with somebody that's in Africa, and toward the afternoon, he's maybe having some kind of a discussion with somebody in Nepal. That's amazing and would not have even been possible a couple decades ago! Yet now, it doesn't even really seem like that big of a deal, because we've all sort of gotten used to it. We don't acknowledge how much technology has blessed our ability to communicate and connect with one another.
Challenges of Modern Technology
I think sometimes we tend to just look at the challenge of it. And there's no question that there are challenges. For instance, in my husband's case, he sits down to answer a simple email, or to send off a quick document, and the computer tells him that it's rebooting the system, or it's upgrading something, and it just won't work how it's supposed to. So a simple two minute task takes more than half an hour.
Like last week, I could feel he was a little bit frustrated, working here from the home office. I was like, "Is there anything I can do to help?" He's just like, "You can help me by keeping me from taking an ax and just destroying this computer!" It's like the very technology that helps us so much also can hinder us. So lately, I've just been thinking about that a little bit and trying to figure out how we can best interact with technology, because we know that it helps us, but we know that it can also challenge us.
Blessings of Technology
I think it's important that while we are aware of the challenges of technology, we also acknowledge how it has improved our lives. Here's a little simple one. A town near me actually got some kind of award for having some of the best traffic signals in the country. It was because they've timed the traffic signals to work with the flow of traffic, depending on the time of day, so that if you are going the speed limit through this very busy part of town, and you're following along, right around at the speed limit, you will hit all the lights green as you go through. Maybe there's this series of 12 or 13 stoplights, but you will only maybe hit one or two of those as you're going along, because they have timed it to help the flow of traffic. At the same time, it will pause and let the other direction go still very regularly. They've just timed it so well, and that's pretty cool.
Before the modern advances of technology, this would have been impossible. Just think about something that simple, and yet we don't appreciate it! We just complain when we hit the one red light. We don't think about the fact that a couple of decades earlier, out of those 13 stoplights, we would have been stopped at maybe 10 of them. We get through that very busy part of town during a busy time of the day in a really smooth fashion. There's a very simple way that technology has helped our lives.
Right now, we have a huge surge in technology to help with our health, including wearable technology that you can use to monitor your heart rate, and to help you keep track of your steps, and how many calories you're burning. I mean, it's just getting better all the time. It's helping our lives to be healthier in that way.
It's a Whole New Work World
I think one of the biggest things where technology has helped us is allowing people to work from their homes and work around their personal lives. It can be a danger, because technology is around you, so you can be sitting in a room full of your entire family, and you can all just be messing around on your devices and not even have a good conversation. That is definitely a danger. We need to be aware of it and think about it, when sometimes you look up, and you're like, "Hey, we're all on our devices. Hey, let's all put down our devices and play a game." You know, of course we need to be looking for that and being cautious of that.
At the same time, my husband can work from home several days of week because of technology, because if there's an important meeting in the office, he doesn't necessarily have to be there in person, because he can join in on a video call. He can work from his desk and sometimes be more effective at home, because he doesn't have coworkers asking him to do things. He can actually just focus on getting his own work tasks taken care of.
I can work from home, also. I do transcription, I do closed-captioning at home, and I work for several other freelance companies where I do some different web consulting and things that I could not do from home. I am sitting here right now recording a podcast that I don't know if it will ever be a profitable business, but it's definitely a passion project of mine, that I could be reaching somebody in France that's listening to this, at some point. I don't even know who's going to listen to it, but it could be anybody. So many people throughout the world. I'm just sitting in my bedroom with a good microphone and a connection to the internet.
It is just amazing how we can connect, and how we can be more productive, and the ways that we can be more creative in the way that we make money, and the way that we live our lives. It's all because of the advancement of modern technology.
Don't Jump on the "Negative About Technology" Bandwagon
Today, I just wanted to give a little plug about that, about, just be aware of the conversations that go on about you about technology, because it's kind of like everybody tends to jump on the "be negative about technology" bandwagon. We need some technology advocates out there! Yes, technology can be challenging, but it also blesses our lives in so many ways. I didn't even scratch the surface.
That is it for today. I hope that I helped you have just a little thought to look around yourself today, and look at how technology has blessed your life. Look at the gadgets you have. Maybe it's your dishwasher. Maybe it's the little light that flashes on in your car to let you know that you need to put oil in it. Maybe it is noticing that several stoplights in a row are green. I want you to look around you, and I want you to be grateful for the time period that you live in and think about how technology has blessed your lives, while of course always being cautious for how it can hinder our lives. Just being aware and being grateful for it.

Awesome Travel Jacket Launches Wildly Successful Crowdfunding Campaigns
I came across this video for a really cool travel jacket last week. It caught my attention because it has so many great features that look like they would be so handy when traveling on a plane!
I'm thinking about getting one of these for my globe-trotting husband for his birthday. (shh!) But I'm still undecided if the perks outweigh the price. You can get the full details about the features and see some other video clips about the various features here: Travel Jacket Kickstarter Campaign
What do you think? Would these features be useful to you the next time you were on a flight? Would you pay for one of these if you traveled often? I'd love to get any feedback that you have!
I hope you have a wonderful #TechTuesday!

Jumbled Sunshine Review: The NEW "Inbox by Gmail"
Have you heard about the new "Inbox by Google" email app? It's a whole new way to interact with your email account, and it may revolutionize the way we use email in our everyday lives. If you're afraid of change, no worries, this app works with Gmail, but it doesn't replace it. You can go back and forth between the two or totally ignore it and stick with what you're doing. But if you're brave and like new innovation, I recommend that you check it out! www.google.com/inbox
As I've been looking for answers to various details about inbox, I ran across some articles criticizing the new interface as being too complicated. It's true that it takes a bit of time to get your mind wrapped around it because it's so un-email-like. But that's exactly what makes it's approach so fascinating and why I decided to try it out. Never fear - I have seen positive reviews, too.
So - I thought it would be fun to chime into the conversation with a positive review of my own. Here goes:
I love it!!!!
(Wait, I think I need a few more exclamation points and loves...)
I Love, Love, Love It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. That's my overall impression after using it for less than 24 hours. There are a few glitches in this first version, and some features that are missing (that are available in Gmail) that I'd like to see in the future. But Google is pretty good at improving and innovating when a program starts to take off with the public, so I guess we'll see how it evolves as time goes on.
In the meantime, here are a few resources to help you understand how Inbox works, and "My Take" on what's so awesome about the new system. (I'm not going into too many details because I want to get back to playing with my new Inbox!)

6 Easy Steps to Using Feedly and Chrome for One-Click RSS Feed Subscriptions
Just a miscellaneous tidbit today. . .
Have you tried to sign up for an RSS feed and been frustrated when you get a bunch of "gobbledy-gook" after clicking on the little orange RSS feed icon? ME TOO!
Or. . . Have you always wondered what the heck an RSS feed is? Been there, done that.
Here's a little tutorial to help you out.

An RSS Feed is simply a text version of new posts on a website (usually a blog). By subscribing to RSS feeds, you can read updates of all your favorite blogs and websites in one place, instead of having to surf the web to visit all your favorite sites. It's a great idea, but since they discontinued Google Reader, it's been tough to find a good replacement RSS Feed Reader. Until NOW.
I did a little bit of searching and figured out a solution that's working well for me. I used Feedly and Chrome RSS Subscription Extension together. Here's how you can set it up in 6 easy steps!
How to Add RSS Feeds to Feedly Using a One-Click Chrome Extension
1. Set up an account at feedly.com. I recommend that you use the "sign in with Google Account option" so everything will seamlessly integrate with the Chrome extension.
2. Install the Chrome RSS subscription extension (https://chrome.google.com/ webstore/detail/rss- subscription-extensio/ nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbf jd). This extension puts the familiar orange RSS icon in your URL bar whenever a site you're visiting has a feed.
2. Go to a site that has an RSS feed (i.e. - feedtheworld.org). You will see the little orange icon pop up on the far right side of your address bar. Right click on it and then choose "options."
3. In options, you will see "RSS Subscription Options" at the top. Click on “add…” button and fill it out like so (you'll only have to do this the first time you subscribe to a feed):
- Description: Feedly
- URL: http://www.feedly.com/home#
subscription/feed/%s
4. Delete the other RSS feed options to make Feedly your default.
5. It’s done! Now when visiting a website which provide RSS, you will see the RSS icon in the multibox, Click on it to quickly add the feed to your Feedly account.
6. To read your subscriptions, login at feedly.com and read away!
Hope this helps some of you who have been wanting to find a replacement for your Google Reader!
ENJOY!

No Time To Write. . . But Hello Anyway!
I decided that if I keep waiting for "time" to write on this blog, I will be waiting forever. Seriously, do you ever feel like your life is a runaway train and you are just scrambling to catch up? I asked a friend this question yesterday, and she said, "Is there ever a time that I *don't* feel like my life is that way?" haha - yeah, that's what it's been like around here the past several weeks!
If you have kids who are in school, you've probably noticed that the closer it gets to summer, the busier and busier things get. Even if you don't have kids, as soon as it starts to get warmer, everyone wants to be outside, playing in the sunshine, digging in the dirt, planting flowers, and getting things in order while it's still cool enough to work and play outside. With kids, you add in the end-of-the-year testing, soccer season, graduation. . .
. . .and so many interruptions that you can't finish a blog post! (I just spent the last 20 minutes answering the door and several phone calls instead of writing. . . lol) Anyway, I didn't even start to mention the *regular* stuff, like your job, your church and community responsibilities, keeping up with the house, maintaining a relationship with your spouse, and the list goes on and on. . .
How to cope? For me, the only way is PLANNING and using a TIMER! (And going easy on yourself when you aren't perfect, because no one is.)
Here are a few of my favorite tools & websites for you to browse, since I can't keep writing now because my timer went off!

Content Filtering Using Your Wireless Router
This is such great information. I found out that just using the wireless router that I already have installed in my home, I can login to the settings and block certain categories to keep my kids safe from pornography and other harmful stuff! And it works not just on one computer, but all ALL the devices in your home that use the wireless internet through that router. devices!
It's a little techie to set up, but not too bad. The hardest part is figuring out how to login to your router. I learned how to do mine from my brother-in-law, you basically enter the "URL" of your router into your address bar, then put in your password and open it up.
Once you get into your router settings, everything else is pretty easy to figure out. If you don't get it right away, do a little googling to figure it out, or send me a note and I'll see if I can help you.
It's SO worth it to find this out - you can actually see every website opened by anyone using your wireless router, in real time. So you can make sure no one is browsing in the middle of the night, or see if your teen is really doing their chores or watching Netflix on their phone, hee hee (not that any of my kids would ever do that of course. . . .)
Now remember, my jumbled friends, that with authority and power comes responsibility. As parents we need to balance our desire to keep our children safe with our respect for them as individuals, and trust as much as we can, only checking up when they give us reason to not trust them. And let them know you are doing it. That's my philosophy - be open with the kids about why you are restricting certain things and then LISTEN to their feedback. Depending on the age and maturity level of your child, there may be some things that you would automatically restrict without realizing that they are actually quite enjoyable for your child and not harmful like you assumed. So - LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN!
Here's some great counsel on the subject:
"We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion. . . . No power or influence can or ought to be maintained . . . only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile— Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy; That he may know that thy faithfulness is stronger than the cords of death."

A Few of My Favorite Inspirational Quotes:
- "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
- "Goals and contingencies, as I've said, are important. But they exist in the future and the past, beyond the pale of the sensory realm. Practice, the path of mastery, exists only in the present. You can see it, hear it, smell it, feel it. To love the plateau is to love the eternal now - to enjoy the inevitable spurts of progress and the fruits of accomplishment, then serenely to accept the new plateau that waits just beyond them. To love the plateau is to love what is most essential and enduring in your life." ~ George Leonard
- "Sometimes, you find yourself in the middle of nowhere; And sometimes, in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself. . . And sometimes it hits you out of nowhere that you love being Jumbled Sunshine! And you're so glad you didn't succeed at changing yourself into someone else, despite many years of trying."
